    Removing Cibie Bi-Iode Lenses

I have probably restored as many 170mm Cibie Bi-Iodes as anyone and I should be expert at this, but I am not. I've been successful a number of times and have experienced breakage a number of times. And of course these lenses are unobtainium.

I have tried a number of methods including:

    1. heating in the oven
    2. soaking in lacquer thinner
    3. endless patient scraping, cutting and prying with a variety of tools

There are times when the lenses fell right off after removing them from the oven - and times when it looked like nothing had changed. Lacquer thinner didn't seem to have much effect. I haven't tried other solvents. Scraping, there's just no access.

Has anyone come up with a fool-proof method of removing these lenses?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas,
    John

I know you used heat from an oven but did you try a heat gun? I would think a gun would give you more control.

I’ve used an industrial heat gun on 118s but, gotta realize it smokes the plating and varnish on the reflectors. Even softened up, takes careful prying with A flat blade. I used hardwood clay forming tools re-shaped as chisels.
