Thread: 68 Targa - Rear Window

    68 Targa - Rear Window

I recently purchased a 68 911T Euro Targa in parts. Mine came with the hard glass rear window. I'm not interested in having this re-installed...I'd rather convert to a soft top that I can put down.

I read that dealers spent a lot of time converting soft tops to the rear window back in the day. Customers wanted a hard window due to heat loss and leaking. I assume I can make this conversion in the reverse, I just don't know how to do it.

If there is any hardware to install, I'd like to do it before it goes to body work so I can have snaps and other hardware attached to the skin prior to finish.

    My questions would be this:
    1. I can purchase a soft-top online through a vendor. I've seen at a couple vendors for those. I assume I need hardware to actually attach it to the underside of the rollbar and to the body. Anyone know what I need and where to get it?

    2. What's the demand for the glass rear window? I assume an original window has some value. See attached pic. I haven't unwrapped it but was told it has small crack in the corner. Anyone know the demand for this part?

    Thanks,
    Chad

    Chad,

Freezing14 used to offer a complete soft window kit. See the link below. I don’t know if he is still active on the forum.

+1 for Freezing in Canada. Bought a complete set from him years ago for a converted 912. Excellent product. Make sure the body still has the brackets installed on the firewall and by the targa bar to mount the SWT hardware to.

Hey Chad, if you're successful in getting a SW kit, I might be interested in the rear glass... depending on which direction the defroster lines go.

    Thanks!

I believe the vertical defroster lines is a one year only for 68 and quite rare/expensive! Not sure if the last one listed here sold for $5-6K?

Can it be done to any targa or only that model year?

i believe all the way up to 1985 has the factory makings in the roll bar.
you have to weld in some pieces on the rear parcel shelf.

This is a pic I have of the car before it was disassembled. I don't see any defroster lines in back glass. Maybe they just aren't visible. I have several other pics, though and nothing shows up. Glass is currently wrapped up & I don't want to tear off the cellophane if I don't have too. Let me know if defroster lines would be visible.

Freezing's last post was back in 2021. I'll try to contact him, but not sure how you contact someone directly?

In the meantime, I found that World Upholstery has a rear window kit for the targa with all of the hardware.

But cost is almost $6K. Not quite in the budget.
