Restoring a SWB rear grill yourself

I am in the process of taking my rear lid grill apart in order to straighten and polish it.

The black mesh grill is held w small (possible) kinda rivets. If I drill them out, how to replace them?

Any advice from experience how to proceed?

I will try to take them apart carefully but will check later my grandmother’s sewing box.

I was lucky that the first rivet separated fairly easy but the others I guess I have to drill in order not to mesh up the aluminum blades.

Question: Franz was lucky to find rivets in the sewing box from his sister but has anyone bought good replacements? I see them at several vendors but you have to buy from pictures ..
Question 2: are they black originally?

    Thanks

clean them and you ll see the original brass… they darken on usage and yes,
you have to buy on pics online…I do not have a reliable source for these.

the 1:1 mesh is even more delicate to find..

I don’t think they are brass. They are silver if you remove the black.
    Could it be nikkel plated?

    Hey Richard,

    Try here: https://lederhaus.de/nieten/
    Either Doppel-Hohlnieten or Selbstlocher.

Is this a match with the original one?

    7 mm
    Common brass
    Color silver

It’s a tall (20mm) grill.I will edit this later, but it might be that they are brass underneath the silver and that the ones that are black these days lost their silver?

The link Cees posted might be correct as well, but “ tails ..” is a good find. Good pictures and description.

Bottomline there are rivets out that work and I will drill out the other 15 and not risk the grill.

Btw what Franz did in a day will take me months (start to finish)

    Thanks,

    Richard
