    Flat 6 vs Deep 6

What was the evolution of these two wheel types?

    Hi Peter,

I am not an expert, but I guess that for the introduction of the hump (to go tubeless and keep the bead positioned) they needed material (Alu) to make the hump. In the Deep fuchs there was not enough.

    just some thoughts,
    regards,
    Bart

    Good source "but in French"
    Part 1 : https://www.flat4ever.com/la-saga-de...-fuchs-part-1/
    Part 2 (deep vs flat)

The same information surely exists in English

While the flat 6 brought the safety hump that tyre manufacturers technical information and specialist said ( and still say?) was necessary for the emerging tubeless along with the redesign of seat area to give safer sealing for associated tubeless valves it seems Porsche didn’t introduce tubeless tyres for a number of years after those redesigned wheels appeared. For example the tubeless steel belt radial only appeared replacing the rayon belt tube type from Pirelli and Dunlop etc around the middle of the 1970s — some time into the Carrera 2.7 impact era. The original 73 RS was developed in calendar 72 at new still used tube-type tyres with a tube even on new low 60 profile (now a combo that I understand that is not recommered for a number of safety reasons) but the tube were used with the flat 6. The design of flat Fuchs was tweaked but that was after the impact bumper era had started. Some discussion here (and other threads) albeit much of it is regarding tyre evolution rather than rim perspective but theey are clearly interrelated matters: https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...light=Tubeless

I've wondered if it didn't allow for a better drop center to ease tire mounting.

Yes, unlike the pre-'73 flat Fuchs, the G-model Fuchs are self-centering (identified by ring-type cap instead of 3-prong cap). Are you saying the humps were tweaked too?

Another big change from deep to flat design is the smaller senter (outside the spokes/petals) to give room for the beveled profile on 7" and wider versions. On the deep wheels there are not room for this "step" between rim and center.
This is why the deep design with its bigger center looks much better than the flat 6.
