that seems to confirm that the numbers on that original document are "stock numbers" probably for the financial accounts but they do not Mirror the Vin number. Much like the stock numbers in later years that start with a C D E F etc to reflect the model year then a number to show the asset number for that year
the question then is did these start at 1 each year - like in later years or are just cumulative until the other system came in - I would bet on cumulative as stock (company car) number 39 in 1966 sound much more like the 39th from the start of the 911's rather than the 39th company car in 1966

What I find interesting is that in the document I posted, the Citroen was crossed out and substituted by a 'VW bus' ... and at the end of the line-up of 911s there is a Citroen!!!

This document from another factory road trip in January 1968 references Wagen 83 and Wagen 84, both 911T models. The purpose of the trip was to test winter tires.

It does seem that these early factory cars could have received sequential identification numbers as Hugh has suggested.

Yes and all the competition cars and sales department cars ( including demo cars press cars and cars for photos etc) would be on that list. Not sure if there would be two lists ( 911/Xx and 912/xx ) or just one. I suspect two lists.
I will try to pull together a list of known works cars over that period to see how many there.

Here are tables of known and suspected Werks SWB cars. This information was pulled from a number of sources including the ESR threads on Versuch Cars and Photos of Cars with Factory Plates.

The first table lists prototypes have been well documented elsewhere.

The second table lists cars with "Company Asset" or Fahrzeug numbers of the form 901/xx, 911/xx, 902/xx, etc. that are not well understood. Two of these cars have been identified by serial number, the remainder have not.

The third table is a catch all for all remaining cars that are known to be Werks cars or might be Werks cars since they have Stuttgart license plates.

Great job so far Eric - beat me to it
However I am pretty sure that the way they number "company assets" will have been slightly different
I think each vehicle type will have its own prefix ie 911/xx 912/xx 904/xx 906/xx etc
This is partly because it would seem to be the rational thing to do in an asset ledger (so you knew what type of cars were there behind the number as well as approx value) but also because I found this as I started to go through my database

it clearly identifies 300 003 as Ferry Porsche's car S-UN 100 but also as asset number 901/3 and mentions two other cars 901/8 and 901/9

I cant work out what those two cars are but I think that this will be a more accurate way of describing each company owned / used cars and race cars although I suspect a full and proper list will be impossible to create as it is unlikely to be the type of data that was kept beyond the time required for company and tax records

The tables on my earlier post have been updated to include 901/3, 901/8 and 901/9 identified by Hugh as additional cars with "company asset" numbers. The single table has also been split up to make a distinction between the prototype cars and these "company asset" cars.
