Thread: Paint recommendations for full restoration

As John notes above, it is not true that it is easier to do spot and blend repairs with single stage. To the contrary, it is much easier with base/clear. Glasurit 22 line single stage does not sand, cut, and polish as easily (read: forgivingly) as 55 line two stage either. You have to decide. If you wanted the car to look as much like it did from the factory you would use a high temp baked enamel. If you want maximum "shine" and durability you use two stage urethane (e.g., Glasurit 55). If you want something in between use 22 line. I use 22 and 55 (depending on preferences) with good success, but I am still able to use these solvent based products in my area. Most of California now allows only water based coatings. In San Francisco, you can't even legally wet sand anymore.

2 Coats of Glasurit single-stage polyurethane, followed by 1 full coat of MIXED 50/50 single-stage polyurethane AND clear single-stage polyurethane, produces amazing long-term result, especially if wet color-sanded by 3M Trizec 3000 AND 5000 papers. I did this in black on my '72 E Targa in 2010, and one can read newspaper in the finish. The finish is not that ultra-glossy wet look, but enough to stand out as a superb paint finish.

My car was painted in SS G-22 and I am very happy I went that direction. My painter told me that same thing - that I will be very difficult to match for repairs should I need one in the future.
