    1970s Porsche 911 Rooftop lamp

    Hi all,

As the title of this post clearly states, I am wondering how many cars have been fitted with a rooftop lamp.
I know Porsche Werks may be the one fitting it, or was it done by racing teams after vehicle purchase?

If the car as for Rally, it would have a headlamp on the top. If the car was for racing, it would have either a red, white or yellow light/blinker?
My question is why, and how they decided the colour of the rooftop light? Racing event based or decision from the racing team?

Could someone please shed some light on this issue?
    Thank you.

The reason why I am asking is mainly that my car used to have one of those lamps.
However, I do not find any track to follow.

Hello, I found this thread on roof lights

It seems they chose the colors to identify the different cars.
I imagine the light is in the middle. So you can see it from both sides.
The light on these were to alert a pit crew that the car wanted to come in. Communication.
Which could be used during daylight too, to communicate.
The color was so they knew which car. ( I guess at night)

    I think it’s a fun addition, accessory.

There is a green glass lens on ebay at the moment.

Hi H-viken, thank you for your feedback.
    Indeed.
My car is italian, and the previous owner told me that the person he got it from bought it from a garage that used the car for racing.
The reason that I heard is that the car was noisy even inside. I am not surprised, since it does not have sound deadening.
They repainted it white, and sold it.
I remember I had a sticker with the garage name somewhere, I am looking it up.
    Best,
    Dennes

    Hi Scott,

Thank you for sharing the post and for the information on the purpose and color of the light.
That seems logical and quite an improvement for that time.
Do you happen to know which races on the 1970s used to have those lights?
    Thank you for sharing it.
I am not looking to get one since my car already had one.
I am just curious and trying to find out more about its history.
    Best,
    Dennes

My light is yellow with a small section white.
    Yes, of course.
Once I got the car, I just put the boxes away, so I never cleaned it.

    Interesting, thanks for photo.

I think many race cars had these lights, at many races.
I’ll keep looking and learning more.

    Hi Scott,
    thanks for the follow-up photo.

    You are most welcome!
Well, I was not born in those times, but I am definitely learning and even more fascinated by it.

I also want to trace my car history, since I was told it was raced before.
Sadly, I cannot find much information online.
So, my focus is also on searching and contacting previous owners, in order to grasp more details.

If you learn something more about it, please share.
