Slower Pace for a Bit

Just a short message to let those doing business with me currently that things are going to take a little bit longer than normal. I had an accident (don't ask - and I was wearing my "Old and in the Way" t-shirt) and messed up the rotary cuffs of both shoulders. Those are hateful and painful injuries my friend. Still moving, just slower.

Ouch. Do what you need to do. Wife tore her rotator cuff a few years back. Ultimately had to do a reverse shoulder replacement. It resulted in limitation of her shoulder movement and 2+ years out she still hurts.

If either is a tear, get the surgery as soon as possible. The musculature contracts and it can no longer be sewn back together and anchored to the bone. Wife has had both shoulders done by the former team physician for the NY Giants. Worst part for her was the exercises afterwards. More crucial to full recovery than the actual surgery. Good luck. Don't wing it!!! Lay off the single sculls for a while.

Funny you should mention sculls. I rowed heavyweight eight's in college.

Thanks for the input. To complicate things further the other shoulder is now worse that the one that all the fuss has been over. I haven't had an MRI on it yet but the other side MRI showed one tendon torn loose from the bone, two with tears, and the other OK. This happened on May 21 and the pain level is still a little tough to manage. The doctor tells me at my age (don't ask) that whether to have surgery or not is up to me. A number of friends have told me the same things about surgery that you say. The PT part doesn't bother me.

I'm aware that rotary cuff injuries don't heal on their own and that range of motion will be severely limited without surgery but I'm not sure I care. I'm not going to get back into a shell any time soon and my athletic days are definitely over. Here is the $64 question (I told you I was old). Will the pain eventually go away without (or even with) surgery? I've been on the chronic pain road for many years (5 back surgeries including a spinal fusion, open heart surgery a year ago, etc.) but the rotary cuff pain is a new level. I like to think that I'm a pretty stoic SOB but this one is kicking my butt.

all the best for soonest recovery…but to be honest..6-8 weeks will go ahead ..as I had been for over 20 years in imaging creating devices - x ray, ultrasound - I am familiar with the upper shoulder injuries. i have not seen pictures, thus and but…

Perfect example of be careful what you post. Some of us have long memories and I recall you posting picture of your crew team previously. Not having had the injury, my advice is only observational. My wife saw the doctor quickly. He advised surgery as soon as possible Worked on Giants football so he knew wherein of he spoke. Good resullts with perfect freedom of movement and some nice pictures of screws in the bone where the tendon was re anchored. Don't know if they were Kmax or not. She also tore her bicep loose and he told her not to mess with that. Her daughter also tore her shoulder and initially went with one of those bullshit doctors who said it could heal. Finally had to have it operated on anyway and has now had it done a second time. Had a carpenter who did some work for me and had ignored it to long. Tendon shrunk and finally had some type partial should replacement. As we see here all the time, "your car (shoulder), your choice". Don't know what anesthesia they use, but if its that versed stuff, go with it. Six colonoscopies and I can really recommend that stuff. Smooth. Don't mess with local surgeons at your age. Head down to UCLA or close substitute. As I say just observations bolstered by 10 years as a Workers Comp lawter.
