    Adding a second fuel filter?

I have a 1966 911 with an inline fuel filter between a Bendix pump and Solex carbs. The pump continues to get a significant amount of particles from the fuel tank. It's a mess. I plan on removing the tank and cleaning that unit. Until I action tank removal project I'm considering adding a second filter to protect the pump from build up. Please suggest a location for this bandaid. I was told a filter is located somewhere near the tank itself. Is that true? If so, are replacement filters available? THANK YOU.

The obvious place would be near the steering rack where the feed line comes from the tank. And this would be after the intank filter which is also going to clog up, so that would give you three filters. Not sure this will allow enough fuel to carbs however. Cleaning the the tank as you said will be the only good solution.

I am always wary of putting a filter ahead of a pump. My engineering experience tells me that when (not if) the filter clogs, I will exceed the pump NPSHR and destroy my pump from cavitation.

The Porsche engineers knew this and put a screen in the tank to catch the larger particles. This clogs much more slowly and will give you warning if you need to clean it. If you must put something between the tank and the pump, it needs to be a strainer which will allow decent flow.

Why go with half baked measures such as additional filters. You admit/know what the problem is. Change/clean the fuel tank. It's not that much of a job.

Thanks to Harry, Ed and ejboy for your comments. I'm going to remove the tank this fall. I know it's dirty - I removed about a tablespoon of grounds from my Epump.
