Addendum. Mine is rubber. No updates in the time I’ve owned this car since 1985.

For the reasons quoted above, I agree. While the one I bought has a cork gasket, a rubber gasket would be correct. To provide further reinforcement, the original “Spare parts catalog” for MY 72 specifically states “Closing cap, blue with rubber gasket”. . .

I guess this debate will continue.
99% certain that this is original 1972 Oil Cap and is,,,,,,,,CORK.

LOL - Maybe we should shift to easier topics, like motor oil or original vs. outlaw???

Here is an original. Unfortunately it's not for sale though. But it works for a reference. Been in the storage since 1986. Would be surprised if it wasn't an original rubber gasket.

Finding 100% consistency from Porsche is a fool's errand.

No doubt. However, enjoyed and learned from the due diligence. Clearly looks like Blau installed both cork and rubber gaskets in their ‘72 oil caps.

I agree. Probably a transition period to rubber.

So, I just checked my cap -- and happy I did! My cap is from a very early '72 (7/71 build), and has rubber.

My car was dripping some oil below the tank and I have been putting off repairing it. It looks like the leak may actually be coming from this 50 year old seal, as it looks like I am getting some leaking running down the tank behind the fender.
