Thread: starter / solenoid question please...

    starter / solenoid question please...

The last time I drove my 67 911 I ended up going about 1.5 miles and shut it down and heard a humming sound...It turns out that the starter, although not engaged with the engine, was still running.

I had noticed this happen a couple of times over the years when I tried to start it...very randomly. It would turn over and not start right away (typical) but when I let the key go the starter kept running while the engine just sat motionless...again just a couple of different times over the years. I have a motorsports electrical cut off so I would rapidly shut off power at the switch and that shut everything down. The starter would then work as advertised and it would start and everything seemed okay.

The last time, as I said above, the engine started and the starter disengaged...but the starter kept running. I didn't hear it because...well...the engine runs megaphones so when it catches its all "hounds of hell" until I shut the motor off. There's no chance of hearing the starter whirring after the motor fires up.

I bought a new (rebuilt) bosch starter from Pelican but it doesn't look correct and it's bigger and it doesn't really want to fit in over the lower stud. I thought maybe I could get my "original" starter and solenoid rebuilt (even though it was apparently a rebuilt one already)...pics below. The starter I took out is on top.

Any thoughts as to what is going wrong with the original starter? Is it something that can be rebuilt "safely". I finally realized that if the starter is screwing up and one day decides to stay engaged after the motor starts it could cause serious problems so I haven't driven the car since...

Also, would love to put in a period correct (002?) starter if anyone has one laying around they wouldn't mind parting with.

    TIA

The SR17X is the original 3/4 HP starter, the SR68X is a 1.5 HP starter. The SR68X is the one we prefer to use since it is less susceptible to hot start problems. The old SR68X was a larger diameter starter, what you have is the newer version reduction gear style. You may have the #50 wire on the wrong terminal. We have not seen a problem using the new style.
