One very knowledgable ex racer told me the 906 10 (also leather 914-6) was an RS wheel while the 903 10 (hard rim 914-6) was used as a base for the RSR wheel.

I assume Mark meant 803 not 903. here is an original 803.10 on Ebay with original factory thick leather wrap dated 4/70.

Yes, 803. Very cool. I’ve never seen a pic of a real one.

I’ve never seen a reference to 803.10 in the factory period factory literature for RS/R but I have this which gives a different steering wheel number:
    IMG_2705.jpg
I hear the lore often but would believe it if someone ever published a factory document showing that 803.10 (or 805.10) was actually specified as equipment on 911.744 in RS or RSR conversion.

Why is there no published evidence in writing just the lore — by comparison there are certainly reference to 914 prefix steering wheel with suffix numbers that are different to 803.10 and 805.10 in the RS and M491 documentation; specifically shown in hard copy documents the factory issued in the period when these cars were new?

I have these original publications showing what the factory listed uniquely as the RS and RSR! I even have looked in my über rare original RS factory documents that even Dr K told me he doesn't have despite his factory archive access when writing the Carrera RS Books — having checked all that still never seen any reference to 805.10 for RS or 803.10 for the RS/R models in those reference rarities.

As context think there were over 100,000 914 made so that’s a lot of 914 prefix wheels kicking around — particularly in America where the 914 was popular for a number of years By comparison weren’t there just 50-something RSRs?

Of course I’m completely open to be convinced by seeing hard printed evidence, if ever that is forthcoming. In-period factory published documents that shows these claimed part numbers were used. That would be new credible data adding to those two different but known part numbers the factory did actually list in 1973 papers as being the equipment for the model 911.744 RS/R.

I’m not the buyer for orphan 380mm wheels so it’s up to folks paying money as to what they believe — as long as they’re happy, I suppose.

Lots of people want their 805.10 wheel to be an RS wheel but it was only an early (70-71) leather covered 914 wheel.

The 914.347.806.10 is the steering wheel part number the factory documented as the equipment for the Carrera 2.7 RS — the limited edition homologation special made for model year 73. It had been used previously in 914/6– a defunct model in 73.

It is part number on the wheel that’s bolted to my genuine 73 RS still with its original leather wrap (mine even has the rare lightweight plastic
horn push that was unique to the earliest RS until Feb 73). I know each of my car’s few previous owners and none recall its steering wheel ever being changed. I’ve asked them! It’s certainly been on this RS for entire period I’ve owned it — more than thirty years. Other RS owners and past owners of well known genuine RS eg Clyde have piped up here too on this forum to say the same.

I have asked before and ask again for anyone to provide evidence in black and white — image where the factory put in writing on original period literature that any wheel part number than 914.347.906.10 is the equipment for the Carrera 2.7 of model year 73 — the Carrera RS. So far written evidence has never been forthcoming !?

Most here will know but not for those unfamiliar who don't have a paper copy this (attached) is the relevant page from the factory original 72/3 Spare Parts maroon binder for 911 — page is taken form source hard copy as printed by the factory at the beginning of 1973 whilst the 73 Carrera RS was actually being made.
    Screenshot_20191012-024042~2.jpg

The binder was intended for use in the Porsche official service network as the reference to identify the correct part for each then current model — copies were available to be purchased through clubs. Occasionally there are a few typos as to be expected in something as complex and ever changing but they are invaluable. There is a key: “1” gives quantity required and this particular row is only marked 1 in the Carrera 2.7 column (also the text description though not visible on that row of this cropped image) further states that steering wheel with this 914.436.806.10 part number is for the Carrera 2.7. The “-“ in other model columns has significance — essentially denoting that this part doesn’t apply to the TES.

No other wheel part number beyond 806.10 is given against the RS.

(I also have the rare factory spare parts list for the Carrera M491 competition-type and that gives a different part number but to be clear it’s not 914.347.803.10 nor is it 914.347. 805.10 that is printed by the factory as the number for the optional RSR wheel). Make of that evidence what you will.

Lord knows how many 914 prefix wheels of 38cm ( 380mm) diameter are still kicking about from the over 100,000 914s that were once sold — orphan steering wheels of 38cm (380 mm) with 914 prefix when being offered for sale often in write-up “allude to” the top of the range Carrera RS! Hmmm!?
