Thread: VHT high temp paint

    VHT high temp paint

I have used VHT high temp paint on exhaust for years. In the past year I have has trouble with cans clogging before 10% is used. The parent company Sherwin Williams has been great, refunding my purchase price twice.
Well I just spoke with customer service, which is super, and the SP 104 flat gray is discontinued.
Does anyone know of a proven gray exhaust paint? I know Stoddard has a paint, but is is double in price and only about half of can size.

Rick, if I am not mistaken, Stoddard no longer carries their exhaust spray paint. I did some investigation and the paint I ended up using for the exhaust system on my early 911 is the one recommended and used by John Willhoit: Thurmalox High Temperature Dark Gray Exhaust Paint. He sells the paint.

Interesting, I just went to the website for the manufacturer and did not see grey, I’ll look again.

Might also try Dupli-Color and their line of engine paints. I’ve also had the same clogging issue with the VHT paints and am not terribly impressed. Dupli-Color goes on really nicely.

It must be old stock Haul. The gray is the only color discontinued. Would not dare buy it again as all I have bought plug. On this style of can to remove the nozzle and try to clean it is not possible.

I’ll order some Thurmalox and Duplicolor and try it. Didn’t know duplicolor made high heat.

Eastwood has this high temperature paint in factory gray. I have not tried it.

Probably not as good as the VHT paint, but the Wurth zinc rich weld thru primer is a decent color.
