    You could have a pandora's box there.

    A car that may have been stolen, then recovered and revinned with a revin plate that is missing.

    And what does the paperwork say?

    Taking thinner will show more. Forensics can be done.

    But essentially the first and last digits are "altered" drilled through. And in between sanded down?

    I cannot tell, but I doubt there is a space at the end and then the star.

    Are there vin stamps on doors or lids?

    It’s too late of a car most likely to have door and lid stamps unless it’s a weird Karmann 70. That last digit is gone, end of story. No A pillar VIN plate? Also, the spacing of the two 1’s look to close to be right.

    Salvaged car? Meant to be scrapped? Stolen?? Could be anything.

    If that’s the production number stamped in the lower dash metal then, might be a ‘77 chassis. Third digit is typically the year.
