Unless you're being absolutely faithful to a Kardex that shows a radio on it I wouldn't worry about a radio dated two years after your car if it was a radio used by Porsche. The car could have come without a radio and the owner could have had it installed at a dealer a couple of years after he got the car.

911MRP, thanks again for the wealth of information.

I believe I will keep the radio and look for more correct knobs. To my eye, my radio is visually appealing with the new in 1968 black gauge faces. And you're right - This is a top end radio and many of these cars got replacements over the years.

I do not have a #'s matching car. The body is a '68 912 into which I am putting a later 2.7 engine I rebuilt last year. I'm not trying to restore the car as it came from the factory, but I am not looking to stretch the boundaries of a '68 too far. It's granted me the freedom to make it my own with regard to colors, trim, etc. It's been nice. The car came back from paint a few months ago and I've just finished wiring the whole thing along with all the levers and cables though the passenger compartment tunnel. I've attached a couple pics.

I have not posted much on the Early 911 Registry because, after all, I do not have a "true" 911. But since my journey began in the Porsche world a few years ago, I've met a bunch of wonderful 911 people who are all very enthusiastic about my restoration. I hope everyone here embraces it as well. This forum is such a wonderful resource.

Best regards and thanks again for all your very useful advice and info. More questions to come!

Makes sense to me if car isn’t matching then why not fit and enjoy a period too range koln radio since it had nice features above the default over used Frankfurt. One last thought. Check the replacement knobs you get are correct fit for the radio spindles. They changed so check if D shape push on typical rubber version works or if you need the earlier type. Will be evident if you’ve remove the white knobs and look at examples to be sure knobs attach similar way. I’d guess D shape push on but can’t be sure as don’t recall when change happened and perhaps phased in across the extensive range

PS never switch on without a speaker load as some radios of era can blow if not connected. This image of a vintage leaflets (although Frankfurt) is dated midway between your car and radio so it might help you or your installer if not familiar with 911 and the required Blaupunkt fitting accessories also figure 2 shows the two box radio like Koln.

I expect our resident power-seller (not a business apparently) might soon list the various items needed among his almost daily relentless deluge of stuff being offered FS

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

Another thought about your almost period correct Koln. It looks correct, and one of the beautiful things about these cars is their ability to have items from other years bolted on (like Johnny Cash's '56, '57, '58,etc Cadillac). Its all reversible without damage. Your car looks fantastic already. I think this will look very correct in it. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress.

Good point. And as I mentioned in a previous reply, I think the look of this stereo matches well with the "newer" black gauges on my '68.

Thank you, Joe. Now that the car is back from bodywork and paint, I'm doing everything else myself. It won't be finished for a while, but I will keep you updated! Headliner install is this week. Wish me luck.
