What Cars Have the "Ping" When Closing the Car's Doors

What car's produce the famous ping sound when their doors are closed? A recent video by a seller of a 67 911S on BaT showed two different types of door opening push button mechanisms, one with a simple push button like those found on the 356s, and one with a trigger-type mechanism. He said that only the latter mechanism produces the ping sound. Is he correct?

All early 911s doors should ping regardless of door handle type. Not sure why, but it's distinctive... we have three early ('67,'68) 911s and they all have it.

Interestingly, the doors of our '85 Euro BMW M635csi also have that satisfying >ping!< but our '62 356 close like a bank vault. Mercedes-like thud, no ping.

The ping comes from the door latch, not the exterior handle.

What make the ping in the latch can also go away.

My old beautiful 72 pinged on only the right door.

    My 1969 pings on both.

Ping might be in the latch, however it does require a good striker as well. In my case, I disassembled old worn out striker, replaced the broken up plastic parts with a new rebuild kit. No ping, just a thud, ugh. Purchased a new complete striker assembly, bingo wonderful ping!

    Thumbs up

Both doors ping on my '73 ....

I love every time I hear it... for the last 35 years...

I believe I have also heard a ping on an early '50's Mercedes...

My early 65 doesn't have a ping, at least not one that I can hear.

The ping comes from the wound spring in the latch, if the spring/latch is dry it will ping, if u lube it up for the long haul it won’t.

My original unmolested '73 "pings" when I close either door. I love the sound and it serves as a reminder to keep it mostly original!
