66 steering rack made in 65 question

What is the purpose of this tear drop part at the end in the steering rack/gear?
The other side has a disc, connected to the rubber bellow.
The passenger side had this larger tear drop.

I just want to cut it off.

It looks like it is one of the anchors for a steering damper, ( which this car must be missing) as I see a boss, that has nothing attached, on the main body.

Yes, it was used for the steering damper - usually a Boge - most of which have been removed over time
