50 years since launch of the Turbo

Soon to be topical in a month’s time …

My rare original British-market English-language press release of the Porsche Turbo (930) launch in Paris and discussing the Porsche stand line-up for the Earl’s Court British motor show that followed immediately afterwards. Interesting display car announced for Earl’s Court:

Seven pages of details. Plus a separate price list which didn’t yet have a UK market price for the new 930. Together with a reprint made by Porsche Cars GB from long established British weekly Autocar’s road test of the demo which they used as a brochure where it compares the performance to the RHD first 500-series 73 RS M472 Touring made in 1972. Little improvement until at illegal road speeds in UK roughly above 70 mph.

In continental Europe I believe only Jurgen Barth was allowed to demonstrate the new model and I know for certain in the UK only Nick Faure was entrusted to give 930 demos— prospects and were not allowed test drives of the model. Pretty certain of latter because discussed it over lunch with Nick a few months ago.

Also an advert of the time making reference to it:

Today I took this photograph of the left hand drive turbo prototype

This is an old photo probably at Frankfurt show which is among the Ted Walker Archive of images

    From the blurb ….
    IMG_8937.jpg
… it seems its role was in part a styling concept display car …

… and built with a 2.7 based engine that was a non running due to parts of turbo initially being a wooden mockup.

Not same the working RHD per production “prototype” that featured at Earls Court motorshow which I believe was this one as featured on CAR

Been in extensive exchange with Nick about this, he has a prodigious memory.

Extract from book referring to the early days of the turbo that he sent me last night authored by the same journalist who wrote the CAR magazine article : “Nick Faure, who drives the AFN Carrera 3.0-litre race car, is in the driver's seat. I'm beside him, and we've come to a place where we can drive this car properly. It is the Turbo from the Earls Court Motor Show, the only RHD prototype. We're in it two months ahead of production and so far as we know this is the first time a Turbo has been taken on the road by outsiders to be driven to its full potential.”

Interesting engine in the silver car that is said to be the
“ Turbo” prototype! Snapped as presented with lid open at the Concours event today.

Didn’t get one of the stamp but for spotters — game of identify the various engine and fuel system components there today and perhaps equally the components not (or no longer) there?
