I agree that elephant hide was the most predominant vinyl, if not the sole option, used for 1968 model year 911S and 911L models through the end of 1967. It looks like both elephant hide and basket weave were used in January and February of 1968, and then basket weave was used for the remainder of the year. Here’s the data I’ve collected over the years based on pictures shared on the web for cars with Kardex dates through February of 1968.

    911S Coupe

    Elephant Hide SN 1180 0002, 0009, 0019, 0137, 0138, 0149, 0182, 0184, 0199, 0208, 0214, 0248, 0344, 0358, 0363, 0513, 0524 (19-Dec-67), 0531 (12-Jan-68)
    Basket Weave SN 1180 0539 (10-Jan-68) 0561 (22-Jan-68), 0675 (2-Feb-68)

    911L Coupe USA

    Elephant Hide SN 1180 5099, 5121, 5152, 5182 (16-Jan-68), 5213 (5-Feb-68)
    Basket Weave SN 1180 5114, 5158, 5200 (14-Feb-68)

    911L Coupe Euro

    Elephant Hide SN 1181 0021, 0169 (20-Sep-67), 0266
Basket Weave SN - no data for Jan and Feb

    911S Targa

    Elephant Hide SN 1185 0061 (11-Sep-67), 0132, 0136
Basket Weave SN - no data for Jan and Feb

    911L Targa US

Elephant Hide SN - no data
    Basket Weave SN 1185 5044 (17-Jan-68)

    911L Targa Euro

    Elephant Hide SN 1186 0114, 0141 (28-Dec-67)
Basket Weave SN - no data for Jan and Feb

Yes - They had headrests as they have the round screw latch on the rear of the seats. The Headrests are now missing however. The door cards and dash are Elephant.

Hello, this is a really beautiful interiour, but the cherry on the cake would be a 67 Recaro bucket with red perforated vinyl and red basketweave inlets.

    Cheers

I’ve seen original basketweave seats in otherwise elephant hide interiors, which makes me think the elephant hide seats were probably made in an even smaller numbers…?

    Hi Michael,
    yes something like this?
The black seat is only in there for the twisty roads to stop me trying to grip the original seat with my clenched butt cheeks.
I have the driver seat in storage and don't see the reason ($$$$) as much as I would like the recaro to go down that path.
