FS: "Unicorn original heat exchangers" for the early 901/911s

I have for sale a set of " Unicorn, Not seen for sale" heat exchangers for the early 901/911s. Will need a skill metal guy to bring it back to life . It is absolutely doable, just ask the esteemed Allen Henderson, proud owner of 300061 or see post #218 under the wonderful thread documenting the finding and restoring car number 300061. Price US$6500.00 shipped CON US plus fees if use paypal.

    Thank you for your interest.

I believe they are rare because Porsche had to recall all of these type heater boxes because they were so rust prone. I think the German Government may have been involved also. I think they were recalled prior to 1966 as I remember.

Together with Solex carburetors, 2 screws window frames, tall grill, aluminum wood steering wheel, theses heat exchangers are the must have if you are bringing back your 901 / early 911 to original condition.
Needless to say , these heat exchangers are the rarest of them all.

In 1967 when they changed the exhaust I believe the conventional heat exchangers we have today were developed for the S and added about 10hp. Funny fact - the normals got restrictor rings installed in the exhaust to drop the power and make a bigger spread of hp between the S. I’ve removed these in the past from normals.

So would I be wrong in assuming the 65 cars with conventional heat exchangers would make as much as 140hp instead of the 130hp the exhaust in this listing produced?

I thought someone did a run of reproductions of these early types.

Freisinger did it and others were looking into it.

If you are restoring a 901 or an early 911 why would you even consider using reproduction parts given the opportunity to have the real deal?

Hey I’m doing a few high end early 911s and some of the junk we are offered these days is so bad it’s going to look awful restored. Or you have to replace so much of the part that it’s a reproduction by the time you are done anyway. I would take a top notch repro over an extremely rotted core, especially at a top price. And if you built the car to sell then nobody is going to pay a dollar more for heat exchangers only the nerds know about vs SSIs - it’s true. Of course everyone has their biased opinions these days. Labor in the west is now ludicrously priced and the quality is often lower than it was 10yrs ago. Just my opinion, GLWTS

This is the pertinent part in my opinion.

The time and skills to repair these rotted parts would be significantly expensive added to the price listed..
These should be used as decorations at this point
