Unhappy RS Plastic Gas Tank Repair

    HELP!

I punctured the botton of my fuel tank this last weekend. I wore one of the ribs down very thin to the point that it was dripping on the ground. I made a field repair with a gas tank repair kit with epoxy and fibreglass cloth but it's made for metal tanks. This slowed the leak down to gas sweating slow enough for me to drive home from Solvang without a problem.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how, who, or where I can get the tank restored.

    Plastic Gas Tank Repair

    Roger,

I keep MarineTex two part boat epoxy in the car for emergencies. (18 years drivin a VW, the stuff saved my butt more then once)

The stuff comes in two forms:
Semi pliable, and rock hard and fileable. The pliable form is recommended for emergency gas tank repairs, the hard form for emergency aluminum block troubles. (lots of cool repair materials in marine supply stores)

I think for the eventual repair you could use the same stuff …or a 2 part plastic ‘stick’ epoxy.
Or you can use a 2 part urethane and even tint the mix the same color as the tank.

I’ll ask the guys at the ‘Mouse’ shop for more options today.

    Chuck

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions! I've used Marine Tex before and it's great stuff, I didn't know it came in a flexable type. I'll be pulling out the tank this weekend so I can get a good look at it with the tank empty.
I've never heard of the Dow Corning product though, can anyone tell me where to get it?
Dave I'll give you all call tomarrow.
You guys are the best, thanks for the help!

    Best regards to all,

    Roger

    P.S. Keep those suggetions coming.

    Hi Roger,

You can get the Marine -Tex at "West Marine down on PCH in Newport.

Another product to consider is dupont "5200" sealant. This stuff stays semi flexible ( i.e. does not dry rock hard) is impervious to heat, cold or solvents and it is absolutely bullet proof. Ask for it at West Marine also, but beware, once it is on & dry it is next to impossible to get off.

    Good Luck !!
