Thread: Batteries

maybe sonnenschein uses the term "dry fit" on 2 different batteries? One a sealed liquid, the other a gel cell? I know that the ones I'm running are indeed gel cells...I'm on my 2nd set of them, opened the top of one of the first set. No liquid inside, but a true gel. So, consider me confused here. Yeah, my cost was roughly the same as bulldog's, so when I saw the $220 per pair price, I flipped.

Well, after reading the endless early 911 battery scenarios here and on other boards, I made my choice.

I bought a Odyssey 1200 battery today for $169 at a local Batteries Plus store. It was in stock and fully charged. Since it's a leakproof gel battery it can be mounted sideways in either box with some room to spare. Very nice battery with brass posts and a metal casing, I installed in driver side and removed lead to passenger box.

Since nobody has said they noticed a handling difference with one batt vs. two, I chose this (cheaper and lighter) route over Sonnenschein. I have an Optima 6V in my 356 which works well and fits perfectly, but their 12V was too large for the 911 box. The setup seems to work great with no mods necessary, but I can't road test since the weather isn't ready for my car yet.

Here's a pic of a similar install (on passenger side).

The posts pointing inboard make me nervous...perhaps wrap some cut down innertube over them as an insulator...something to cut down the possibility of a short? That's the reason the factory placed the rubber caps over the + posts on the original dual battery set-up.

Since my battery boxes in the '73 track car are long gone, I got an Odyssey PC925 dry cell that I'm going to mount in the smuggler's box to save some weight over the large Optima red top I've been using. Dimensions are : Length 6 5/8", Width 7 1/16", Height 5 13/16", with 470 CCA and 925 Pulse Cranking Amps.

How much wt. do you save over the Optima?

And, how does the ability to crank when cold compare to the Optima?

    Randy-

Haven't put them on the scales, but I would say the Odyssey weighs a good 20 lbs. less, maybe more. It is half the size. It has half the cold cranking amps, too, but it's enough to turn over the 3.4 liter, 10.5:1 compression motor in the coldest weather we have around here (which is rarely freezing), and the car isn't a daily driver.

The Optima is around 35 lbs. Not sure if that's 20 lbs. more than the Odyssey, but at 15 lbs., that would be quite light. In cold climates (near 32ºF or <), I would suggest a battery with a high CCA.
