    NYC area expert mechanic

    Hi folks--
New member. Bringing my California '71T Targa east this week. Need to hook up with the best Porsche doctor in the area to keep her healthy as she is today. Any suggestions? Close to Westchester County is best but will travel for right mechanic. Thanks. J

    Me Too

    Hi Silverstreak,
I have also been looking for a good mechanic in the city. Fortunately both of my cars are in Florida until later this Spring.
The only shop I have heard of around NYC is Par Porsche. However, I have no experience with them, and I believe that they handle other European makes besides Porsches.
I don't know how good they are especially with the early ones. NYC garages are notorious for being crooks, so be careful and don't trust anyone too much.
Also, be very careful of the potholes, expecially down in the Canal Street area and Tribeca on the west side. It's very easy to bottom out.

    NYC

Thanks G. I hear PAR has pissed off a customer or two in this group. Hear good things about Rick Deman Motors in Nyack & Rennwerke, both from member Marc Weintraub. as for downtown potholes, it'll be a cold day at ground zero when I drive my Targa around Canal Street. J

    NYC Porsche Mechanics

    J,
Thanks for the info. Nyack is only a 1/2 drive from the city, so they would be my first choice.
I have never met Marc Weintraub but we did speak and emailed each other a few times going back a 3-4 years ago. We planned to meet at the Hershey Swap but ended missing each other. If I recall correctly, he has a silver 73 911S. I vaguely recall that he also had a 911E which he was thinking of selling back then.
If you get a chance, you should check out the Hershey Porsche meet next weekend. It was mediocre last year, but a few years ago it was good. Make sure to get there early as the good stuff gets pick over early - before 11:00.
As for NYC driving, my car of choice is an early bronco. I have had a few, and they are amazing when bouncing thru the city- especially in winter. They also scare the the curry out of the cabbies since the old broncos are all metal and the fenders sit at about eye level to the average cab. They don't even think about cutting you off.....

    Hershey

Garth--Thanks for the Hershey heads up. I haven't gotten used to checking the calendar. May just tool on down.
As for Deman Motors, highly recommended. Elmsford is actually closer to NYC though by a few miles. Its straight up the Saw Mill Pkwy about 30 miles from Times Sq. Either way you'll be in good hands according to Marc.
