If you need an alloy frame for the horn pad, I have one, with the Wolfsburg VW pad on. It's yours for the price of mail.

    George,

That is really interesting yours is broken in the same place. Guess everyone uses their left thumb to honk the horn. Thanks for the offer for a metal replacement. I will try to repair mine first just to keep the original on there. I will replace the rubber spring also. Would you guys recommend glueing the rubber center piece back on the plastic 'butterfly' or just leave it as is? Thanks.

    Interesting thread.

What is the difference between RS wheel and 2.4 wheel? Does it look the same but smaller diameter? My 2.4 wheel is large diameter and very thin rimmed (can hurt my palms if I grip it too tight).

    RS Wheel

I have a 914 steering wheel on my 1972 911T. The horn only honks when you press the right side of the horn pad. What's wrong ?

    Cheers

For those who are interested,,,,, here are 2 pic's of the double wraped wheel..also known as the GT wheel , ... this one in particular came out a brand new 2.8 RSR in 1973 and was bagged till i stumbled upon it...Not the different horn button as compared to the normal winged version... There were 2 different part #'s for these wheels.

Hmmm... Looks like Herr Piech brought in some Folgers coffee jar lids from his kitchen!

That horn button is the horn button which came in 1965 Porsche 911s. I guess Porsche went back to the [original] version without wings to save three or four ounces.

Of course the '65s have a large diameter wheel with a thin wood rim. It's very different from the "GT Wheel."

Without actually attacking your car with an Ohmeter, I can't be sure, but I can think of two possibilities:

    1. Part of the contact area under your horn button is dirty and needs to be cleaned, or

    2. The "brush" which conducts electricity up into your horn button is worn and only completes the circuit when you push on the right side (I think pushing on that side compresses the brush). It's part number (for a '70 914) is 914.347.831.00 and the teminology in PET is "contacts" In spite of the 914... number it seems to be comon to early 911s (and maybe even late 356s). It's easy to change: remove the horn button, pull out the old one and pop in a new one. No tools required, but the part costs something over $20. It seems to be very available, indicating it's not too reliable...
