    Mahle

I contacted Mahle company directly, and the following is what they said:

Today we only produce Nikasil liners for these engines and the liners are indeed the same.
MAHLE part number is 503 WR 19

Below is a table showing the MAHLE part numbers for piston, liner and assembly (matched piston & liner kit) for each engine type.

    Vehicle_____________Piston______Liner________Assem bly
    911 2.2"E" (155hp)___503 04 00___503 WR 19___503 04 90
    911 2.2"S" (180hp)___503 03 00___503 WR 19___503 03 90
    911 2.4"S" (190hp)___503 01 00___503 WR 19___503 01 90

Both the "E" and "S" pistons have valve cut outs as you can see from the attached pictures. However there are further differences. Both the compression height of the piston and the overall length differs between the "E" and the "S" piston, but more importantly the "S" piston is forged and the "E" piston is cast.
Additionally the gudgeon pin is shorter on the "S" piston (58mm compared to 66mm).

    beginner,

cool, thanks for the info (although the pics didn't come through).

I think the difference is that I'm looking at OEM pistons made by Mahle back in the 70's. Back then, pretty sure they were all forged (think that pre-69 they were cast). They may have gone back to the current set up as you mentioned. I went up to the shop this afternoon and we laid out a bunch of pistons from 2.0L, 2.2. and 2.4, T's, E's and S's. The 2.0 L ones (and some 356 ones) were cast (thicker walls). My original 2.4S ones are forged, and the 2.2E spec Mahle's are also forged (thinner walls like the 2.4s). They weigh the same vs the heavier 2.0L ones (no scale, just in my hands).

Geez, does this help clarify or make it worse?

Err... I don't know the answer but according to books Porsche used cast pistons in all its production cars except 911S models (2.0, 2.2, 2.4) and needless to say 2.7RS.
A couple days ago I contacted the European division of Mahle but I don't want to ask them more questions right now but there is a US division if you want to ask them:

Technical Dept of MAHLE Pistons and Engine Components, email: dan.belling@us.mahle.com

    or

    MAHLE Motorsports Inc., email: steve.day@us.mahle.com

Use the part #'s shown above as references because it's the same worldwide.

This might be an interesting point…

I contacted Mahle US Inc. to do some homework on the 90mm 2.7RS 9.5:1 & 10.5:1 Mehle piston sets Andial were selling …

Guess what? … Mahle US (New Jersey) didn't know what-da-hell I was talkin about!

After talking to Arnold at Andial it seems they had the Mahle factory make a special run of high compression piston sets just for them … completely bypassing Mehle US…

So, I guess what I'm saying is... when it comes to issues other then standard 'bread & butter' business, I would always contact Mehle Europe for the answer.

BTW … the 9.5:1 Mehle/Andail piston set is the one I bought and putting in my car… and YES, there's a huge hole where my wallet used to be...

    ... and so it goes

    Chuck

--The 90mm 9.5:1 piston set you got from Andial, it is definitely made by Mahle in Germany? Not JE?
If so, I envy you! What an ultimate engine....
If it's not too rude to ask, how much was the set? Did you buy Nikasil cylinders also?

Did you just ask if I was sure that I have Mehle pistons???

    Yes beginner…

Mehle 90mm 9.5:1 pistons w/rings, pins, clips… in Mehle Nikasil liners … wraped in Mehle logo paper, all in a red Mehle box …

If you really tried, you could probably get the JE set for about $1600.00 w/o liners…(also did my homework on those)

I paid about $1000.00 more than that (w/$100.00 discount and no tax) for the Mehle/Andail set…

Thanks for concern beginner ... no spanking intended

    Cheers,

Cast, forged, not sure it really matters in the end. It seems that my 9.1:1 compression pistons for $300 might have been a good deal relative to Chuck's outlay (god man, you are serious!).

I'm at that point with my resto, and with all the options, mods, opinions, etc... where "its all good". I just want my damn car!

Yeah, but you've got a '67 Malibu to enjoy. Me, an AudiA4 with nothing but problems.
