    Oil Coolers

    Greetings....

My '73 911S Sunroof Coupe with 69,000 original miles on it does not have an oil cooler and there are no signs that it has ever had one. The car is equipped with factory air conditioning.

I was talking to a friend who has a '73 911S Targa about it and as it turns out his car does not have an oil cooler either. This is the first time I have ever heard of a 911S not having an oil cooler. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Thanks,
    John Audette

    John,

I believe there is a couple of threads on this on both this board and P/P board...

There seems to be no set rule or pattern governing which early 911, S or otherwise, received a factory auxiliary oil cooler.

    My 73-S did not...

I retro fitted a 72' 'radiator-type' cooler with late (74'- ) oil lines that, I feel, puts the thermostat in the most logical and efficient place.

    Cheers,

Add me to the list of '73S without an oil cooler. I have factory A/C as well.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger as my car is set up the same way. It was an option.
As Chuck noted in his post the '74 and later thermostat console location is superior (much further away from the heat of the engine) and is what most of my buddies have done in the past rather than sourcing the early thermostat console and lines.

John, my '73S targa does not have the fender-mounted oil cooler either.

What month were your cooler-less cars built? Mine was 5/73.

I wonder what the commnon thread is between our cars. Why do some '73S have oil coolers and some don't. Did cars with factory A/C not get them? Is it a targa thing or did Porsche run out of oil cooler lines for our early cars while they were concentrating on developing the new body styled cars?

No rhyme or reason; my car was not a factory A/C car (it was dealer installed) and has no cooler either. I believe it is a February build but don't hold me to it since I don't have the information in front of me. The serial number is 9113300832 and is a 7R case motor as well. The A/C has been retired in the last week or so and now the car is much lighter and easier to work on as well. Between that and the seats I've gained horsepower with no engine work! Ain't life grand?
Now the engine reminds me of a proper 911 engine .....NAKED!

PS: Anybody interested in some original Porsche condensors complete with factory part numbers on them?
C'mon or I'm going to put them on e-bay and get a fortune.

I'm not sure which month mine was built. I read somewhere (possibly in Dempsey's "101 Projects," that Porsche didn't put the oil coolers on any cars in 1973. Mine, by the way does not have a/c.

    Neil,

Did some homework on this some years ago …

Taking a good cross section of 73'-S's, there seemed to be no rhyme or reason or common thread for the addition of the auxiliary factory cooler.

    Sounds like 'the games-a-foot'

Go for it Neil … we really would like to know...

BTW, my 73'-S coupe is #1099 ... an April build... and no cooler
