Thread: Rare Early Options

  1. #291
This is what I wrote in the second printing of Authenticity II after conferring with 911MRP:

For 1972 and 1973, a larger rectangular mirror was fitted on the driver’s door. It, like the Durant, had a polished stainless-steel finish. The 1968-1971 Durant mirror continued to be used on RHD cars and LHD cars which had mirrors on both doors. When a passenger’s side mirror was installed, it was placed further back on the door in some markets. The 1971-1973 Swedish delivery 911 passenger’s side door mirror had the convex mirror. A right-side rectangular mirror was not available through the end of the 1973 model year.

Today I added a revisions section to the Gallery feature at www.tpr-inc.com It shows all the revised and added photos (all viewable in the photos section) in the second printing (November 2021) as well as the major text revisions including the one above.

Don't think importer used raydyot at least not 72/3. They were however very popular lamps in U.K. A PO of my car was a rally driver so he fitted raydyots ttg. The clip on covers are nicely done on raydyots. I wouldn’t be surprised if dealers fitted British brand raydyots here in U.K. as British brand radios, kangol British seatbelts (for example) were often fitted in preference to the factory equivalent option. Some of these at importer not dealer. By way of context end of early 911 era coincided more or less when Britain joined the common market Jan 1973 somprbaly explains some of the use of British made accessory items in British market German cars.

My car’s PO kindly dug out and sent me photos of the car when it was equipped with them from back in early 70s. Mercifully the RS was his road car he only rallied Escorts including RAC. On several of the old photos their son was a toddler, I’ve met with him now as an adult and working in motorsport when the family were running one of their historic rally cars by invitation of FOS organisers on the little special rally demo stage at top of hill.

It is true that it was in September 1967 that Sweden switched to right-hand traffic. It was reposted in Christophorus November 1967.Name: 5C76E2F4-0E47-4EBC-9294-3684F49F1BDB.jpg

Any info on the dash plaques with the first owners name? Factory install or dealership?
Jeff Smith remembers seeing old stock of these still in Porsche blister packs at Emory’s warehouse decades ago.
He seems to think they were a dealership accessory but Cabell thinks they were a factory install in cars customer custom ordered through dealership and I was thinking perhaps factory pickup program.
Early ones were pewter as was in my 70S and in much later G model cars they were gold.
    Any thoughts ?

My plaque from the 70S is at the shop. I’ll get a photo taken. I have this photo of a later G body gold plaque on file.
Rick Cabell’s 70S had the early pewter plaque as well.

    Regards

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.
