Thread: Lsd

    Lsd

I'm in the UK and wondered if anyone over in San Francisco could score me some....................

Actually, I would like some advice about fitting a differential (either Limited slip or torque biasing). I've heard that the originals are hard to source. I have also heard some negative feedback about Quaife who are the default diff over here.

There are a few ads in Excellence. Any opinions ?

Any help would be gratefully received

    Cheers

    Hi Mike,

I have had both the factory and Quaife diffs and I found the Quaife to be more reliable. I never did the swap myself so I don't know for sure if there are any issues, but I was told they were a direct swap.

    Hope this helps,

    Marc

    Hello there Mike!
I am sure someone will chime in with the details, but I have recently read that the type of L S Diff needed depends on the application.
More specifically, autocross vs track racing have differing requirements in this area. One type "free wheels" under braking, and the other doesn't apparently.
So, this is the main consideration for your decision, I think...

Paul Guard of Guard Transmissions makes pieces that put the Quaife to shame as far as quality of materials and construction. He makes both Torsen type and clutch type LSDs for Porsches. Shipping would be a killer to the UK, though, they are HEAVY bits...

Not that I know of. You can email Paul at gears@gte.net or contact him by phone at the numbers in the Excellence ad.

I'd like to find a source for some "short" gearsets preferably factory stuff. I'm not too keen on aftermarket stuff only because I was told to avoid it.

    Tom,

I am curious, why were you advised to avoid aftermarket gears? Was it any manufacturer in particular?

I have no personal information or experience; it's could be just a wives tale but a good friend, racer, and engine builder doesn't like them. If somebody can prove otherwise I'll buy what's the best regardless of where it came from.
