My Guess is one or both of the following:

A - interferes with left arm while driving (hands on the wheel).

B - Interferes with easy access to controls/ignition at left of wheel.

I consider it one of the few early 911 design flaws - guess it adds character. I solved the issue by installing some RS door panels - very cool, and pulls on BOTH doors.

There is a story out there about Butzi or Ferry Porsche hitting their hand on it, and having it removed. My guess is that that's just folklore, though.

The solution for a long time was to get a 'passenger' handle from a junk yard in a country with RHD cars. But those are harder and harder to find, now.
