Thread: 150,000th 911

    150,000th 911

Im in the process of restoring a 70 911S and was doing some reading to find that the 150,000th 911 built was a S. Does anyone know what the VIN is on that particular car?

My guess is that it's not the kind of 'S' you think it is. More like a mid year S ('74-'77) when all 911's were S's.

I would agree with you but the car was produced in 1970 according to what I was reading

In 1970 Porsche built only around 50,000 911s at that point. The production table that I have lists totals for model (turbo,SC) so it is hard to pin point exactly but it looks like in 77 or 78. I will look for another table.

Porsche actually built a non-"S" in 1974; I owned one. The Carrera and a "Standard" "S" were also offered (same engine in the US) but you never see the latter of the two. The non-"S" was lethargic as hell with the added weight. 73-T CIS was a much better car.

The car you're refering to was the 150,000th Porsche produced. Not the 150,000th 911.

The car was a 70'S Coupe bought by David Nurse a founding member of the Porsche Club of America.

There's a photo of him and his wife toasting with "Butzi" in front of the car in Michael Cottons book "The Porsche 911 and Derivatives including the 959".

    I don't know the VIN.

I've always considered the glass to be half full...that is until I reached middle age and realized that it is actually half empty.

The car was also mentioned in the original version of "EXCELLENCE WAS EXPECTED". David Nurse was from the Seattle area. So we can assume it started life there? Again, no VIN mentioned. Perhaps if somebody had contacts at the factory?

The 100,000th Porsche was a 911 delivered to a police department in Germany in December, 1966. I wonder if it had cop shocks?

Yes, I did look again and you are correct that the car I was thinking of is the 150,000th Porsche built, not the 150,000th 911. Unfortunately Porsche of North America does not have the records accessable to let me know what the VIN was on that car. Does anyone have a way to contact Porsche in Germany? I tried looking over the home page for Porsche but couldnt find any easy way to write them to find out.

"Cop Shocks"... pardon the diversion, but I love that line:

"It's got a cop motor: a 440 cubic inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is this the new Bluesmobile, or what?"
