Starter question

Were original starters the same '69 thru '73? Reason I'm asking is a friend has bought a used starter from a '70T, but he has a '71E that has a retrofitted 915 transmission. Will a starter from a 901 transmission car bolt right up to one with a 915? Or, will the newer transmission make a difference?

Hi Paul, i believe 65-71's used the bosch sr-17x, and the 72-89's the sr-68x..... I think they are interchangeable with some fiddling, ie you need to wire up a relay for the cold start on later cars....

The original 911 starter was the Bosch SR-17X, which is better known as the Volkswagen Autostickshift starter. It's widely available through VW suppliers.

For trivia bugs: the SR-17X used in 1965 uses a pinion gear which is different from all the others. It's what a VW mechanic would call a 6 Volt pinion.

Hmmm. I've been using the same starter (SR-17X, I think) that I installed on my '69 when it was stock, then used it when I upgraded to a 2.7 w/a '78 915 gearbox. I've had no pinion-to-ring gear engagement issues.
