    Muffler paint

my sport muffler is peeling and flaking. I will be pulling it off next week to strip it and recoat it with something. Has anyone had success with any specific product. What would the factory color be for the muffler. Grey or black?
    Thanks for input,
    Dave

    Exhaust Paint

    Hi Dave,

I have always used VHT brand High Temp spray paint in gray which is a perfect match for the factory "primer gray" finish. It has become very hard to find in gray anymore, silver, black, and many other colors no problem. I was told that the gray has been discontinued. I heard that Stoddard in your neck of the woods also has a very good gray high heat paint.
    Hope this helps.

    All the best!

I'm proud of you Roger a clear concise answer....no mucking about. Actually any grey high temp paint will do. Wonder why they discontinued the grey?

I had my header and muffler Jet Hot coated flat black black last year.
The Jet Hot black has held up very well.
No touch ups in over a year and still looking good.

I thought about that Mike. Only problem I heard was the Jet Hot is not warranteed unless it is brand new metal. Was yours new or used? Thanks for the input Roger and Mike!
That is such a cool exhaust on your car Mike!

    Dave,

First I used to do what Roger said... VHT...However, starting with a bead blasted finish REALLY helps the longevity.

But now like Mike.. I did the exchangers and muffler (both used) at JetHot...

I did mine in their #1200-Gray and they look great and very much like factory...

As to what the factory put on their 'sport mufflers' ... ya-got-me-bud

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers

    Sport exhaust paint color

Reviving this old thread since there is good info above that is still relevant. What is the consensus these days on best product/finish to use and whether they should be gray or black?

The exterior of my Sport exhaust is looking a bit rough and trying to figure out what direction to go. I'm considering ceramic coating my Sport exhaust and Performance Coatings has a "Porsche gray" they specially developed that is really close to the Porsche factory finish found on the standard street mufflers. However, perhaps black might look better on my car. Was black ever used in period on Sport exhaust? Thanks for any insight.

I had the muffler and "heat exchangers" for my 356A powder coated. A local powder coater offered high temperature coatings in silver and black and it has held up very well. I chose the "silver" which is a silverish light gray which kind of resembles the standard silver Jet-Hot ceramic coating. I used Eastwood chassis black on the parts of the heat exchangers that carry heater air--that paint adhered very well.

It's not a perfect match for the factory original paint, but it was cheaper and easier than sending the parts to Jet-Hot.

Don't use the Stoddard exhaust paint. Although the color match to the original color is very good when sprayed, it turns pinkish purple at the hot spots quite rapidly. Too bad.

I think your carrera would look good with black! S
