I think they had that job farmed out to China

Thanks for the moral support! Henk your tip may prove to be fruitful - I think I foolishly put the tach in first because it was easiest.

Is there any trick to just removing the tach (other than as stated earlier on this thread)? Mine sticks till you tap it...

You'll also have to remove the steering wheel and column mast jacket.

BTW, this job isn't nearly such a PIA if it is done before the air ducts, blower, steering wheel, etc. are installed, as was probably the case on the assembly line at Zuffenhausen.

The tip about using the tach hole to remove the other gauges is only true if you have very small hands and absurdly short forearms, and you will never get the clock or fuel gauge out from the tach hole. And forget about using the speedo or oil gauges holes -- way too small to get a hand through, and you will never reach the far knurled nuts on the fuel / clock gauges from there.

Just remove the blower assembly and steering wheel and do it from the trunk. Removal can be done just by removing the blower motor and upper blower hoses if you know what you are searching (blindly) for. Installation is more difficult.

1970 was the first model year for the gaskets. 1969 had a lot in common with SWB models, then somebody got smart and revised a lot of early design shortcomings for 1970 onward.

If you get one thumb screw removed, you can sometime rotate the gauge for easier access....
