Thread: How do you remove the gauges on a '69 911?

  1. #1

How do you remove the gauges on a '69 911?

So the gauges on the '69 911 have the two retention bolts on the backside to hold them in, unlike later gauges that can simply be popped out.

So here's my stupid question: how do you get to the backside of these gauges to unscrew the *$&@%%*# retention bolts?

I want to repaint my gauge trim rings. I tried to approach from underneath the dash this morning and couldn't even see the backside of the gauges. What am I missing here?

    Thanks to all!

I have a '65, and it definitely has two "bolts" on the back of each instrument. I had thought the long wheelbase cars just used the rubber ring, but you have the genuine article and I don't.

They aren't actually bolts. Each gauge has two threaded studs, and thumbscrews go on those studs and hold 2 L-shaped brackets which secure each gauge (the speedometer actually has a single C-shaped bracket).

You get at them from the trunk.

    1. Remove your trunk carpet

    2. Lie down in the trunk

    3. Shine a flashlight up there and hope you can see the gauges

    4. Reach up and unscrew the thumbscrews

    5. Push out the gauges

    6. Disconnect wires, speedometer cables, etc. and finish removing the gauges

    7. Order new thumbscrews because they will have slipped from your fingers and rolled away somewhere.

I was going to point out that little step, but I had trouble organizing the rats nest of wires when I pulled my gauges.

About all I have retained from a Master's in Electrical Engineering is the ability to trace wiring diagrams. I managed to reverse engineer it. If you aren't really comfortable with wiring, you better make some advance preparations.

My 69-911 has a cardboard (black) cover over the gauges. Depending on which gague you eant to remove you will also have to remove the defroster tubes and the distribution box...
I haven't done this for 5 years so I may have forgotten something.

Be very careful the rubber rings on the gague where it enters the
    the dash board.

Not a stupid question. Mark all the wires.

I have some extra thumb screws for anyone who loses one or has already lost one. I also have an extra bracket or two.
As for removig the gauges, I thought the 69 model year popped out from the front as well. The early SWB gauges are a pain in the ass to work on...

I was just digging this up and had to vent as I try to reinstall the gauges in my 69 - man-o-man did Porsche employ a secret army of double-jointed, left-handed, long-fingered elves to get these gauges in? I don't recall being so frustrated and cramped doing anything in my whole life.

Take the big tach out first from the trunk, then you can stick your hand in the hole from the interior to get to the other ones, fairly simple..... ;-)
    Good luck.
