Do You Carry Spares?

I would love to be the guy that can fix anything on the fly but in reallity I almost always make it worse than it was before I "fixed" it. I can handle a tire change or something to that equivelant and I have replaced a couple of hoses, oil and brakes but for the road the best tool for me is a AAA card.

This post made me take a look at the contents of my "medic bag". It is a small knapsack freebie from some trade show. It serves multiple cars and contains :

Cheapo metric socket set
Spark plug socket
Cheapo metric wrenches
Screwdriver (with multiple tips)
Pliers
fuses
Points (Porsche, BMW) and condenser (tii)
fan belts
fan pulley wrench
A few pairs of latex gloves
flashlight
Rags
Duct tape
Electrical tape
Baling wire
some tie wraps
A few 1156/1157 bulbs
1 quart of Castrol

I only really grab it for longer trips or for shakedown runs. I have used it a few times for adjustments, and I have had to replenish the Castrol on several occasions. but have not used the kit for roadside repairs so far. OTOH, a few items in the bag are due to past adventures (you'd be surprised how few auto parts stores in Lower Offdamap carry points and condenser for 30 year old furrin cars!). Beyond that, it is cell phone and AAA time !

As I indicated, I was lucky enough to pick up a nearly perfect 30 year old tool kit for less than $400. Got the one missing piece today (10/11 mm wrench), but I have no plans to use this set.

So I have bought a set of Craftsman wrenches, klein screwdrivers, and a small bag.

PWD, thanks for the advice on the Lug wrench and socket. I will take that to heart (or at least to the Auto Parts store). That's one item I still need, and was looking for options.

Jack: Cables, Hmmm interesting.

I hope that I don't need to use any of these either. But as we take trips around, I expect that I can find a mechanic to do the work if I'm not able, but getting parts . . . . . . that's another story, so belts, cables, points, condenser are all good things to consider. To say nothing about the importance of the cell phone/AAA option (which I certainly have.)
