Thread: Vintage Driving Apparel

    Question Vintage Driving Apparel

Could anyone suggest a source for vintage or replica driving apparel? Think Steve McQueen in "LeMans", late 60s, early 70s.

    Thanks

What a funny thread. Are you taking to the road or track? All you need for the track is a natural color Nomex with one vertical stripe, no advertising and few patches. Black shoes. Plain helmut, preferrably white, open face with a Nomex bandana.

For the road, let's see: A Members Only jacket with a turtleneck, tight jeans and some old deck shoes ought to capture the McQueen look. All from the Goodwill Store. (Well, not the jeans, and you can get turtlenecks everywhere as they are back). You could change to a Madras shirt for hot weather. Long hair and some RayBan Aviators ought to finish you right up in style.

Or, you could just shop at LL Bean or Lands End. They have been selling the same stuff since the '60s.

    yes, but...

if you knew what I got for a late sixties motorcycle racing helmet...you wouldn't be so...so... slantnose turbo like on the guy.

This stuff is popular with the hipsters around here.

Then again, you may not want people thinking you're from Detroit - they get a bit scared.

    Thumbs up

Okay! I'm not sure how we got fromSteve McQueen to Austin Powers but it's an interesting angle I hadn't considered. Would fuzzy dice count as a period correct upgrade on a '69 S.

    I did find this though.

Pretty much what I was looking for. The Dunlop suits are a little out of my price range at the moment. If any one comes across a less expensive alternative please let me know.

    Thanks

P.S. Speaking of sideburns, there is a great Robbie Williams rock video from a couple years back where he is depicted as a Francois Cevert character. It includes lots of great vintage footage of Cevert and Stewart.

    Retro Huh

Just take a look in the back of your Excellence magazine they havn't changed. Or better yet ask PWD where he buys his clothes and you'll get the look you want.
