Thread: Retractable seatbelt upgrade?

  1. #11

    Seat belts

Harry, thanks for puting up the web address. Trampas was the guy I delt with and he was very helpful. I also got a set up for my 2.4 MFI 70 VW Bus. They went in as easy as the set I got for Dick's RS. Hope this helps.

    All the best!

    Roger,

Does Dick's car have retractible seat belts, if so does he have covers over the reels like this? I need to do something with my belts because they are very hard to withdraw from the reel. Any idea if the PEP belts fit under these covers? Thanks.

    Yes

    Brian:

The car Roger put the new Pepart seat belts in is a touring (472) edition and has the seat belt retractor covers just as you've pictured.

Roger's tech did a nice installation and the Pepart seatbelts look and work fine. I have a NOS set for a future restoration and the Peparts units compare quite favorably and are much (!!!) less expensive than the NOS set.

    Hope that helps.

And I hope that weather breaks soon so so you can drive your
    car!

    Dick,

Thanks for the info. Did your red RS have the retractable belt option? Could you tell me for future reference what the part #s are for your NOS belts and are they Repa?

Trampas, from PEP, told me they could transfer over my existing hardware onto the new belts. I kind of like the gold thread going down the middle of the existing belts, but they are date stamped 1975 so I'm sure they are not original. Since the new reels will fit inside the covers I will send the existing belts and hardware to PEP. Thanks again.

Yeah I can't wait for the weather to turn. Soon I hope.

I just did this upgrade on my 70E. The passenger side took 6+ hours as I picked my way through the process, drivers side about 1.5 to 2. IT takes some time pulling the seats and I opted to pull the attachement brackets to refit the new receivers etc. rather than try to remove and attach the new ones while still on the seat frame. My 70E had the factory bolts in place for the retractor mounting, you remove that animal from the wheel well with a 18mm wrench (maybe 19mm?). Worked pretty slick and bought a great set of rear panel covers to make it look right. Pretty close to stock, except the belts are from a 993 and work like new.
