Historical Riverside Raceway Celebrated at Wine Country Classic Vintage Car Races

Historical Riverside International Raceway put world-class motor racing on the map in the western United States when it opened its gates for the first time on Sept. 21, 1957, in Southern California. For the next 31 years, the track built memories that will last a lifetime with such stars as Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Parnelli Jones and Carroll Shelby.

The raceway closed its gates for good in 1988, but for one weekend, memories will come alive as Infineon Raceway celebrates the famous raceway with the Riverside Reunion, which will serve as the theme for the Wine Country Classic Vintage Car Races, June 5-6. Riverside featured the best in motor racing, whether it was Formula 1, Can-Am, Formula 5000, Indy Car or NASCAR, and that tradition will be honored at Infineon Raceway.

The Riverside Reunion will highlight another great weekend of vintage car racing on the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course.

It will be a true celebration of some of the most infamous cars to ever take to the track, with more than 350 entries expected for the weekend. Highlighted machines will include cars from Ferrari, Bugatti, Lotus, Corvette and Jaguar. Competition will take place in nine racing groups, with competitive cars dating all the way back to 1914.

Enthusiasts can get an up-close look at these beautifully-maintained machines while enjoying a stroll through the open paddock and chatting with drivers. A variety of car corrals will also be featured throughout the facility, including areas for Porsche, Dodge Viper, Mercedes, Corvette, Shelby Cobra and Jaguar.

Off track, visitors of all interests will find something to enjoy at Infineon Raceway. The paddock area will feature a motor sports art display, highlighting the car-inspired work of more than 10 artists. This area will offer a chance to view and purchase the images on display.

The event will also provide a chance to sample some of the finest food and wines from the Bay Area. Throughout the weekend, fans can enjoy the Wine Country Living Food and Wine Pavilion in Turn 2, which will offer a chance to sample fine wines and food while enjoying a sweeping view of the road course.

Following Saturday’s on-track activities, more than 30 vintage cars will drive from the track to downtown Sonoma for the Vintage Race Car Festival. In addition to the beautiful cars on display, this event features tastes from some of the best Sonoma Valley restaurants and wineries. All proceeds from this event benefit the Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau and the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation. For more information, please contact Denise Silver at (707) 933-3950.

    Recount

PS - I did a recount. Here's the corral list so far:

    1) 68redlines73
    2) Mr9146
    3) yopurp (+ 2 friends?)
    4) tyson
    5) rst 73 (maybe)
    6) Chuck Miller (maybe)
    7) garyz (maybe)
    8) Cris H (maybe)
    9) misterarj
    10) vdavie

My count is a minimum 6 committed and 12 if I count the maybe's. We need 20 by the first week of May. Right now, the PCA corral is our only option unless there's some divine intervention.
