!URGENT! $6,900 to rebuild my engine?

I'm afraid to add up the parts and machining invoices. One of these days I will. And I did all the manual labor too. I keep telling myself, it was only $2000, it was only $2000, it was only $2000.

Heck, the little 2 cylinder BMW engines I rebuild cost anywhere from $2-$3,000 for a full boat rebuild.

For you gearheads, here is a Petersmeier Bearing Cover (carrier).
These are as good as it gets. German made from a very hard alloy. This and the bearing will set you back about $575 once the smoke settles. Have a crank rebuilt to new is around $1,200 if you need rods and new bearings and more if it's balanced. Pistons are roughly $250 pair, a valve job not including all parts is around $350, New lightweight flywheel $450, new clutch and pressure plate $250-$300, Bearings seals etc figure another $150.
Machine work on cylinders $150.
Grand total $3,375 no labor.

It's a steal for 4 more cylinders!!!

PS: Of course you can re-use old parts but for the money I always suggest to skip cutting corners. I've never had an issue with an engine that was done "right" the first time.

PS: That's a brass cage bearing; we like the plastic races on the front and the brass caged roller bearings on the rear main that allow for radial movement. These engines can rev pretty hard for their age and that's a necessity on those that can. I failed to mention that the BMW skunkworks used to provide a billet crank that cost in the neighborhood of $2,200. Can't get them anymore. Too bad as they were a beautiful piece of work (art!)

I don't what your situation is with your other cars. I see you are trying to sell your Z. You might consider selling another as well to subsidize your 911 habbit. It's not the guy with the most toys that wins, but the guy who really enjoys what he can afford.

It would be sad to see the 911 go, but there will be other times and other cars. Best to be able to handle the expenses that go with these cars when able, rather than putting a second on the house.

You're right, especially after all the time and energy that I've put into it. The Z definately has to go to make perminate room for the Porsche. Somthing may happen with the rest of them but i'm not the only person in the family and the 911 doesn't really make for a great daily driver. So all in all I really have no idea what will happen but i'll definately get to enjoy it while I have it, and there will always be other cars at other times.

Did you decide on what to do yet?

The motor should be ready to start assembling in about a month and i think we should have it together by summer. As for weather or not i will get to keep it is still up in the air. we really still have way too much money in it. i have not sold the Z yet, i'm reluctant to put it on ebay or somthing cause i'm afraid it won't bring enough but we'll see.

anyone know what a 68' 911 with no rust good interior new suspension new tires rebuilt engine(170hp) with high comp pistons, ssi, sport muffler, would be worth, there are some pics on the for sale page from awhile ago. thsi should help me in my desicion to keep it or not.
