Like most of the metal in the interior...
Satin Black
Hope this helps,

thanks, thats what i though. the previous owner of my car was chrome crazy and he had gotten his hands onthe shift lever.
Shift LEVER you say? The one that the shift knob sits atop? Mine sure isn't black...and I'm reasonably sure it's original. EDIT! EDIT! Just back from the garage, where I was going to check to see if it was chrome or stainless! HOLY KRAP! 30 years with the same car, and I just discovered that my shift lever is satin black...Chuck, my apologies...I have no idea why I thought my lever was shiny metal of some kind...

I think Chuck was thinking of the parking brake lever, as I was.
The shifter should be chrome. Yup.
Shawn.
Now I have to edit too: some big back peddling going on here. My 67 is chrome, as it should be. You later model guys are on your own.

Now I'm wondering when the factory made the change...with me being so positive in my mind with it being chrome or stainless. Could I have been thinking of one of my earlier cars? I had '66, '69, and '70 models. Maybe somebody with a '71 will weigh in??? Hang in there Xboy, don't get out the spray can just yet...

the chrome gearshift lever was replaced with satin black with the 915 trans in 72. After 1971, the only chrome gear shifters were on sporto trans cars. So for any 71 car...shifter should be chrome.
Whew...I feel better now. Thanks Paul...Sorry Chuck.
