    engine out

I am having my engine out next week to have a new clutch put in.
I am thinking of replacing the sound deadening material in the engine compartment.
    1. has anyone use anything else than the factory stuff such as dynamat or other sound deadening materials?
    any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

(I am planning on putting dynamat in the car behind the rear seats when i get my paint job done but for right now just want to replace the current engine compartment's material)

I put Dynamat Extreme behind the seats, and a factory replacement pad in the engine compartment. This made a noticeable difference in noise level (I had no engine pad and deteriorated seat pad), I was satisfied with the results.

I would caution you on putting DM on both surfaces. I think it may make the car TOO quiet (unless that's what you want).

Also DM isn't cheap OR light.

There's a product called Noise Killer 207. It's a water-base material you spray or brush on. I might try this when I rip out the back seat insulation. Dynamat and equivalent materials are heavy and expensive as JCR mentions. Not sure about the installed weight of this product; depends on coverage and how many coats you apply.

On the engine side, there's a reflective material from a company called Apziz or something like that. Maybe someone will chime in with their observations. I used a foamed based material from JC Whitney. It's 3/4" thick with shiny mylar on one side and peel and stick on the other. I made a pattern out of notebook paper taped together. Apziz is diecut to fit. JCW also carries a Dynamat equivalent; about 24x54" sheet for $30 or so last time I checked. I used this on the floor to replace the horsehair and rust; also sporadically on chassis panels to reduce road vibration.

The foam engine pads that are on the market for $59/$69, that are represented as OE, don't really fit the bill.
In one of the after market catalogs,(maybe Tweeks) they have a nice reflective padding with a hemmed border. Although it doesn't look OE, it appears to perform. It appears to be a product that would last forever and continue to look good though out it's life.

I don't get it. Do you mean to say you want to REDUCE the level of engine noise coming into the car? I must be missing something here.

BTW, I installed that bright silver stuff from Performance after Dave B at TRE recommended it. The car's not on the road yet, so I can't report on the results.

Yes, that's where I saw it, Performance products. Let us know how it fits.

yes; believe or not i would like to reduce some of the engine noise esp on long highway drives.

I will look into the bright silver stuff..was it hard to install?

It fit nicely and was very easy to install. The hardest part was detaching and re-attaching the shock that holds up the deck lid, and that ain't hard to do. Of course, I had the engine out, as will you.
