Cain,
I'd love to see some pics of how the deep 6 front and 7R back wheels relate to each other - and the wheel openings on your car.
Please post pics if you get a chance.

Cain,
You better be bringing that badboy to Monterey in 3 weeks! I need you as one of my key drinking buddies.
I also have some R wheels in search of a car to wear them, so I will be picking your brains my friend!

Greetings all,
I just fitted 7 Rs to my 68. Using 2 quarter inch spacers left the tire too close for comfort to the trailing arm bolts. A factory 22 mm spacer worked perfectly. Tires are 5.5 15 Hossier vintage race tires. There is 1.5+ neg. camber. Hope this helps.
Best,
Don
P.S. Thanks again to Nick Moss for helping me out with a wheel.
I'll be there WOLFMAN!
And I'll be drinking. But I gotta warn ya'...I'm actually taking my better half as my wingman. No worries though...she can drink with the best of 'em.
And yes...the 72 is Monte-Rey bound!
And on a note more directly related to the origins of this thread...thanks Don...I'll try the 22mm's.

The factory recommended 27mm spacers on the 7" wheels in '68. Does that leave too much room on the inside?

The 22mm spacers leave about a finger away from the tire hitting the bolts and look just right. Remember the R had flared fenders where the narrow 911 obviously does not. If it did I could go up a tire size. The 27 mm with the flares I am sure worked great with a larger tire. For my car the 22s are perfect.
Best,
Don
I'll try 22mm then, when I get to that point in my project. Thanks Don.

Jens,
I will have the car at Daytona. I will be happy to show you.

Joel, the tires available at the time the R wheel was introduced (1967) were skinny and tall. Modern equivalents are not readily available. The tread width of a comparable modern day tire of equal section width is wider, hence rubbing is more of an issue, I found 16mm is the spacer width that worked best for me using R wheels with 215/60-15 or 225/50-15 tires in the rear of a '72 911.Originally posted by joelrkaplan
Randy.... thanks, I understand most of what you said but what do you mean by "too much for todays tires?"......I am thinking clearance is clearance....pls explain...TIA
