What are the options to repair a dash trim / radio cutout ?

Can guys who properly repaired a butchered radio hole share pictures or tips of how they did it ? Pretty much all the oldies I've ever owned came with a butchered dash trim to incorporate a modern stereo. So I've never really seen how a proper one comes together... My 72 911 came butchered too but with the proper old blaupunkt in the trunk. How do I make this look good now ? The radio is supposed to pop through the trim, one rectangular hole for the buttons/display, 2 smaller ones for the tune/volume button, right???

I've seen lots of older style (->68) flat trim for sale, but never the later trim piece with edges, with a radio cutout. Is that available anywhere? Or do you buy a used one somewhere and cut it ??? Are there other tricks ? I was thinking of a thin sheet of metal or something and disguising it under the deco vinyl trim (which isn't basket weave either, havent found that either). Right now I'm using a plastic faceplate that came with it but it's pretty ugly ;-) Thanks in advance...

you answered your own question That's what they did in the factory covered a piece of metal with basketweave that was used in 72 item 15 on the dash layout photo.

Autos International has the material to cover the metal piece

And Woody's will sell you the metal replacement.

Great, thanks... I assumed my piece was butchered but from the diagram above, I now see it's normal but I'm missing the extra metal plate to shrink the opening.... Thanks for Woody's site, I assume that piece slides in the existing trim under the vinyl. Perfect !!!

My material looks like this.... Hopefully it's correct for a 72, as it matches my doors and I'd hate to redo those too... it's not basket weave and looks smoother than elephant hide...

The radio plate is more of a cover than anything. The radios are held in by the side clips. This isn't a great picture, but you can see the clip behind the knob.

The plate is covered with vinyl or elephant hide- I got some from Auto's International.

Clips go on the radio, the plate is then put on and held in place with the post retaining nuts. Then the whole thing just slides into the large opening.

That was what suprised me when I installed my radio. The plate doen't hold it in. The clips do. That is what worked for me anyway.
