Thread: Should I have two battery boxes?

Should I have two battery boxes?

I have a '72 911T. New to me. It has only one battery box. It is on the left side. There is no box on the right. I once had a '69T with two batteries. I did a search here and I read about '73's with two batteries. Should the '72 have two or not?

A '72T came with 2 battery boxes. One reason for removing the one on the right was to improve air flow to a front mounted (in the right fender) oil cooler. The VIN # of your car?

I will look again but I see no patch or any indication that there was ever a box on the right. I also have no oil cooler in the right front fender well. Should there be one there? Hmmmm!

My '73 has 2 boxes as has everything I've seen up to 1974.
I owned a '73 that had one box. However, the right one was removed and welded over for air flow to the cooler like Paul suggests. This was a track car and believe it or not, I re-installed the battery box correctly (or my body guy did) to the point that it was never noticed. An absolutely perfect job and expensive too. If left to do it over again I'd have spent the money on something else because it was doing its' job.

I've had both of mine removed (two coolers), and you'd never be able to find the seam. A good body guy'll make it invisible.

Sounds like you are all saying my car once had a box on the right side. Did all '72T's have an oil cooler there? Wonder why I don't?
While on the subject of front wheel wells, I have a large (gallon at least) plastic container of some sort under the left fender, behind the headlight bucket. First thought it might be the windshield washer tank but that is in the trunk. I think the fender has been replaced. Could it be a part from a later car? Clearly my car has been messed with! All theories welcome.

In 1972, only the "S" models came standard with an oil cooling radiator mounted in the right front wheelwell. This radiator was optional on the "T" and "E" models. The large container you mention in the left fender was part of the smog control "evap" system. If I type correctly, this should give you a link to a diagram. Suggest you print it out.

Thanks for the reference diagram pwd72s. Sounds like the only modification on my car is removal of the right battery box. Wonder why anyone would go to the trouble/expense? Car is a stock Sportomatic T with no oil cooler.
Next question: Is there a small battery readily available to use in my remaining box? I now have a very large one, mounted crosswise. It takes space intended for the charcoal cannister.
I would like to put things in proper order, even if only one battery.
