Oil coolers were an option on the '73-S. I've not heard of one having a factory cooler unless it came with factory air conditioning.

Just guessing here...but possibly the original rotted out due to acid splash...and a previous owner decided it was easier to plug the hole, and go to a single battery?Originally posted by Porsche Rescue
Thanks for the reference diagram pwd72s. Sounds like the only modification on my car is removal of the right battery box. Wonder why anyone would go to the trouble/expense?

I think that is a good guess. If true, I suspect the left one was replaced for the same reason because it looks too good to have had a battery on it for 32 years. I need to look at both sides a little more closely.
I never knew that the Porsches had two battery boxes till I saw it in my newly purchased Johnson's book.
Why did Porsche need two batteries in the early 70's? Do people still put two batteries in their cars when they restore them?

My understanding is that it was for weight balance, side to side.
The swb cars had only one battery. They also had weights inserted behind the front bumper on each side to help front/ rear weight balance. Battery change was made in '69 with longer wheel base and weights were eliminated.
A proper concours restoration would require two correct batteries in '69-73 cars.
Larry, the way I understand it, Porsche went to the twin battery boxes as a weight distribution thing. Heck, early in the 911 run, they actually placed pig iron weights in the front bumper! I still run the twin batteries, only now they are gel cells in the exact same size as originals, made by sonnenschein, a german battery maker. However, many have gone to optima, stinger, etc. in a single battery set-up. A search on either here or Pelican should yield tons of info. Twin batteries were standard from '69 thru '73, if memory serves...
