In the 1980's, California went to white license plates with seven blue digits, like "RGRP911". So someone out there is back-dating license plates. Which is very cool if the CHP doesn't have a problem with it.

Why would the authorities care? As long as the license number matches the registration and is current, it shouldn't matter.

Backdated plates look cool, whether black w/ yellow ('63-'69) or yellow w/ black ('56-62) letters & numbers... but *if* you get any CHP/LAPD/PO on a *bad* day, they'll write you up for *tampering/altering* a license plate. Won't matter if it is an environmental/personal plate or regular issue plate. Someone I worked with was written up for changing a regular issue, white reflectorized w/ blue plate. All he did was paint the blue numbers/letters to black (didn't touch the white reflectorized part).
I know of alot of guys who run backdated/altered (environmental) plates, because it looks 'period correct'... just don't get stopped for doing something stupid. JMO, but I think that the reason that the newer CA plates have 'California' in script is to prevent/reduce backdating plates... or the DMV is suddenly concerned with 'style'.... ;-)
