Thread: 911R prototypes

How were you able to make the connection between the 930 turbo look car and the #116 race car??
What do you mean? Physically? Well see attached pictures how it got back to original.

By the way there is no doubt that this is the original 116 car. The chassisnumber, unique signs of times (it rolled one day) and factory rally modifications and options are still there.

This is good stuff, guys, keep it coming. The 911R is my favorite. The history of these 4 prototypes is very interesting. It seems to me that if the factory pulled them off the 911S production lines, then they would have had the 6-digit 30XXXX series number on them. I wonder if they stamped an R number after it instead of the "S"? Like Jen, I am curious- have you seen any number plates or stamping on R#3, Andy? Is it 305876R3?

At the risk of bringing up something from the dim and distant past....

I happened to come across this question while looking for something else, and I thought that I'd cast some light on the subject...

R3 is stamped simply 307671 and R4 is stamped 307670. (No 'S', no 'R') Interesting thing here is that R3 is stamped perpendicularly to the body panels under the bonnet (i.e. the chassis number reads perfectly if you stand in front of the car). R4 on the other hand is stamped diagonally. Don't know about R1 and R2.

    There, some completely useless trivia...

Do you guys have X-ray vision or what ?

    Well spotted.

Sadly, here in Australia, many really good early cars suffered from the "turbo look" conversion process during the '80's.

In speaking with my friend and local mechanic, Phil Hearn, he sadly recounted how they would have to lay back the original sports seats flat, so they would more easily fit into the dumpsters, along with the perfectly good, rust free front fenders and long hoods.

makes you want to take up dumpster diving doesnt it ?
