Kerry Morse wrote an article for Panorama (that I can't find....), but I do distinctly remember 4 prototypes, and 20 production cars. I'll find the article. One of the proto's I believe was the Vic Elford Sporto 84 hour car.

Andy, I think this is the same orange Sporto. The windows are interesting.

    Hello,

There is a nearly identical car being restored right now in Southern California, Some of you may know the car.The owner refers to it as a T/R. I am not sure if that is a factory designation or? The car has the flares, simple door panels, perlon carpets and headliner and lots of the little tricks mentioned.

As far as some of the pictures of the R looking like an ordinary 911. Porsche depending on the event may have either had to put weight on or wanted the cars to look more like the production cars they were trying to sell on Monday. Steel fenders and bumpers may have been more durable than the thin galss versions for certain events as well. Just my theories..

My 68 Rallye has R parts fitted from the factory such as the rollbar, skidplates, toolbin, ect so it proves anything was possible back then. I have only seen the toolbin on two other cars and both were the 911 R.

    Best,

    Don

I found the article, it is in Panorama, March 1997. Main portion of article written by Bill Oursler, with a one page article on the 4 prototypes by Kerry Morse.

Bob, I've posted from a number of different sources. I'll dig them up. I have some other notable 911R proto-looking photos that I need to scan.
