Good idea! Here's the Kardex for my 1964 911.

And if you don't have your Kardex yet, I can get all SWB Kardexes (so up to 1969) for 220 dollar, I think that's twice as expensive as a COA...

    1970 911s

    VIN = 9110301059
    Eng# = 6301439
    Trans# = 7107346

    Doesn't look like much --- at first . . .

I actually had this document described to me before I saw it, so . . .

What first got my attention was the 'Händler-Nr' --- = dealer number . . . at the top/middlish. Turns out that '100' indicates 'factory use' . . . meaning the car was built for some internal purpose. For more about dealer = 100, see Hugh's comments @post #441 . . .
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ty-nine/page45

Next comes the regular/more-obvious stuff --- PROD.NR. = 'secret number' (obscured), VIN, engine, trans, etc . . . all sorta-recognizable --- even if you don't know any German. When someone talks about 'numbers-matching'? . . . this is where that 'match' comes from

    Some additional info about 'Bereifung' = 'tireage' = Pirelli . . . + 'Farbe' = 'color' = '838312' = 8383 = metallic green + '12' = black leatherette. Even the 'Schlüssel-Nr' = 'key number' = C1304 gets called-out

Below that is a series of 3-digit numbers --- codes for options originally installed on the car. De-coding these may be kinda tricky, since some of the designations may've changed between model-years. Here's a thread about these codes that got me started . . .
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...%2C+71%2C+911T

    Here're the de-coded options for this car . . .
    . . . . 185 = safety belts
    . . . . 220 = limited slip differential
    . . . . 425 = rear wiper
    . . . . 463 = Blaupunkt Köln
    . . . . 470 = Comfort-equipment
    . . . . 568 = colored windows
    . . . . 651 = power windows

The next part of the document describes the 'Wagenbesitzer' = 'vehicle owner.' This stuff is hand-written + so can be a little hard to read. This one reads . . .

    Versuch, verk 4.71 aus:
    xJo Siffert, Fribourg, Schweiz,
    (obscured)

    =

    Test (Department), sold-off April '71
to Jo Siffert, Fribourg, Switzerland, to an address
    (obscured)

Until I tracked-down my Kardex? --- I had no idea what my car was . . . nobody did

Turns out that --- after Jo Siffert was killed at Brands Hatch, in Oct '71 . . . his car was sold off + disappeared --- for 40-some years --- 'just a car' . . .

    . . . until this document turned-up

    Now? . . . I just have Jo Siffert's old car --- + an ex-Test Department hooptie, for-all-I-know . . . in my garage. I'm still in shock!

Point is --- there are LOTS of 911s like this --- cars that had interesting lives before they showed-up here -- w/ us . . .

    . . . 'Celebrity' cars . . .
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...celebrity+cars

    . . . 'Racers' cars
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ight=Rodriguez

    . . . 'Versuch' cars . . .
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...racers%27+cars

    . . . even Porsche-family cars . . .
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ht=Family+cars

. . . never mind some of the kooky options/colors/destinations/etc that these things can turn up with

And even if all a car ever did was stay in the same town, or was first bought by a plumber or bus-driver --- or sat in a barn its whole life . . .

. . . don't cha wanna know how it all started out?

    So?

    Get

    Your

    Kardex

    . . . then post it here?

Porsche sent me this in 1980 I guess. Notice how the bottom was folded up to maintain privacy of other owners.Name: 911 kardex.JPG

[QUOTE=pwd72s;255566]Scott, I was too cheap to ever buy one. What I do have is a letter from the factory, written before the Kardex thing came along. I just sent a letter, asking for info on my car. In a month or so I got a polite response:
"Our production records show that your Porsche was produced in July of 1972 and left the factory with the following specifications:
    engine number 632 2285
    color Irish Green
    Interior Beige Leather

options: US equipment, limited slip differential, blaupunkt radio, fog lights, tinted windows.
    Dealer Volkswagon of America, Chicago
In model year 1972 a total of 1750 911S coupes and 983 Targas were produced.
We hope to have been of help and remain,
    yours sincerely,
    K. Resch O. Lang"

How intresting, i have a 73, with recaros seat and sold in Chicago also. Its not an S, but sold in chicago same year!.......

This was the letter I received from Porsche regarding my 912. Neither the 911 or 912 had the years listed on their respective titles and I was quite clueless back then.
