    Engine Shroud Refinishing

I seem to recall a thread quite some time ago about refinishing (rather than repainting) engine shrouds. It didn't show up in a search; perhaps it was lost to the hacking incident.

In any event, I have a good original 1973 shroud that suffers from fading in some places. What to do?

Was it Chuck who advised using shoe dye?

    Shine on!

Chuck is the "shoe shine" man (leather dye, I believe). Good article but potentially messy for the hands! Wear gloves.

    Best,

    Dick,

Yes it was Chuck that put up that original post. I bought the Tandy Red leather dye and have plenty left over. Send me your address and I will gladly send it to you. I may even have the instructions somewhere. If not I'm sure Chuck can give the steps again.

    Dick,
Couldn't find it on line in either...
This is how it showed up in the ESSES...Vol. 13, No. 3

I would amend the procedure by adding........ The color will mellow and fade in the environment so keep gradually applying more coats (at about 3 parts alcohol to 1 part dye) until the shroud is a very deep and bright red.

    Brian and Chuck,

Where did you get that dye? Is it something that I could get locally and it the brand Tandy or does it describe the color.

    Thanks,
    Neil

    Neil,

Tandy is a huge (Texas I believe) leather tanning/processing company that's been around for a long time... for fun Mr. Tandy opened an electronic parts hobby store awhile back and called it 'Radio Shack'...some people just have the 'touch'....

Tandy makes a whole line of leather worker hobby products and sells them though Tandy stores and on line...

The stuff I used is Tandy 'RED' leather dye ... about $3.50

    Hope this helps,

    Thanks Chuck,

I thought Tandy might be some exotic company. I Googled them and found their web site. You can go here to find a store near you.

That Tandy was quite a talent.
